Megaways slots started with Bonanza in 2016, and since then more than 300 titles have appeared under the Big Time Gaming licence. The table shows the highest-RTP titles actually running in Hungarian casinos – White Rabbit's 97.24% is the peak of the genre, and the same figure applies to the Buy Bonus price. The "max. ways to win" is the product of six reels × 2–7 symbols, the ceiling – the average spin gives 15–30 thousand ways. Volatility is high everywhere.

How the Megaways mechanic is built

The essence of Megaways is that the height of the reels changes randomly every spin: 2–7 symbols can stop on a reel, and the number of ways to win is the product of the symbol counts of the six reels. Two everywhere: 64 ways. Seven everywhere: 117,649. Payout goes left to right for identical symbols anywhere on adjacent reels – there are no paylines. What follows:

  • Two spins are never the same game – the grid shape differs every round
  • Spins with a high symbol count are rarer, but the big hit comes there
  • The bet splits into fixed 20 units, not per line
  • Hit frequency is low (20–25%), the bonus round rare (1 in 150–300)

The three building blocks of the mechanic – the variable reel, the cascade and the growing multiplier – existed separately before. Big Time Gaming's idea was to put them into one system, and since Bonanza this has been the template.

Dynamically changing symbol count on the reels

The variable reel height is the heart of Megaways, and its most misunderstood element. The system does not "grant" more ways as a reward: the height of every reel is drawn by the random number generator between 2 and 7, independently, with weighted frequency. Height 7 is rarer than 3, so the 117,649 maximum comes together in 1–2% of spins. The practical effect is on variance: a spin with a low way count (64–1,000) almost certainly does not pay, a high one (50,000+) can bring 20–50x even from a mid symbol. Buffalo King's seventh, horizontal reel adds one extra symbol – hence the 200,704 ceiling.

Cascading spins (Tumbling Reels)

In most Megaways titles, winning symbols disappear, those above tumble into their place, and new ones arrive from the top – this is the cascade, and as long as there is a new hit, the chain continues, without an extra bet. In Bonanza and Gonzo's Quest every step of the cascade raises the multiplier (1x → 2x → 3x → 5x), in Big Bass Bonanza Megaways it only runs in the base game. The cascade is what makes hit frequency bearable alongside the high volatility: one spin can give 3–4 chains, and the combined payout reaches 5–10 times the bet this way. The cascade is priced into the RTP, it is not a free round.

Growing multipliers in bonus rounds

The big Megaways wins come from here. In the bonus round the cascade multiplier does not reset between chains but grows until the end of the round – unlimited in Bonanza, in Big Bass Bonanza Megaways in 2x, 3x, 10x steps by collecting the fisherman symbol. A 15-spin bonus round with 20–30 cascades reaches a 20–30x multiplier, and a high-way-count spin at this point can pay 500–2,000x. Buy Bonus gives the round for 100x the bet in most titles – the average return matches the RTP, so ~96x, but the variance is huge: in our tests the Buy Bonus return ranged between 20x and 800x.

Big Time Gaming and licensing the technology

Megaways is not a genre but a trademark: Australian Big Time Gaming patented it in 2015 and has licensed it to other studios since 2018. The licence fee is per head and per title, which is why some Megaways titles cost the operator more – this explains why some casinos keep a narrower selection. The major licensees:

  • Pragmatic Play – Megaways versions of Big Bass Bonanza, Buffalo King, Great Rhino, Sweet Bonanza
  • Red Tiger – Gonzo's Quest Megaways, Piggy Riches Megaways
  • Blueprint Gaming – Eye of Horus, Fishin' Frenzy Megaways
  • iSoftBet – Aztec Gold, Majestic Megaways
  • NetEnt – Divine Fortune Megaways, Twin Spin Megaways

Big Time Gaming's own titles (Bonanza, Extra Chilli, White Rabbit) remain the reference – licensees mostly took over the mechanic and tailored the multiplier system to their own taste. Since the 2021 Evolution acquisition, BTG is part of the Evolution group, which has improved the availability of Megaways titles on the Hungarian market: Spinbetter and Lemon Casino run both lines. Whatever bears the "Megaways" name is guaranteed to use the BTG system.

Pros and cons of high-volatility Megaways

Megaways slots are not for everyone, and casinos do not spell that out. What speaks for and against them:

  • + Big ceiling – 10,000–50,000x max. win in most titles
  • + High RTP – good titles 96–97%, White Rabbit 97.24%
  • + Variety – two spins are never the same, the cascade chains are exciting
  • + Buy Bonus – anyone who only wants the bonus round gets it instantly for 100x the bet
  • – Low hit frequency – 20–25%, so three spins in four do not pay
  • – Rare bonus round – 1 in 150–300 spins, 300 empty rounds are not unusual
  • – Bankroll demand – because of variance, 200–300 round bets are needed for a meaningful session
  • – Restricted from bonus – many casinos exclude Megaways titles from wagering, or set a max. bet

The practical rule: the round bet should be 0.3–0.5% of the bankroll, so HUF 30–50 at HUF 10,000. If you like frequent small wins, classic slots or 3-reel machines are for you – Megaways is not.
